our herb garden!

This morning, while the weather was still cool, we freshened up our little herb garden. We added some mint, lemongrass, and basil plants, courtesy of hubs' mom. And Anna planted more cilantro seeds. Hope they all grow fast, big, and full. I just love going out there and snip whatever I need to make dinner. Bonus that hubs and his assistant does all the maintenance.

Will 7 Months Update

7 Months
On the day Will turned 7 months old, he developed a high fever and was sick for the next couple of days. I didn't get around to take his monthly picture. He's finally better now and I am just getting a chance to sit down and write this post.

I can't believe that Will is still getting 100% Mama's milk. Every time when I think that I will need to supplement soon, he skips a middle-of-the-night feeding, which leaves me with extra to carry over. All in all, he gets about 800cc of milk daily. In addition, he gets two or three meals of solids. I had planned to do baby led weaning, but it's just easier to mash up some food and spoon feed him. But on top of mushy food, we feed him whatever we eat, too. Fish, fried chicken, biscuits, vegetables, rice, noodles, tons of fruits, pudding, chocolate. He eats it all.

I hope he continues his good eating habit and doesn't give me any trouble with food as he gets older.

Seven months in and Will still wakes up 1-2 times a night. Most evenings, we put him down between the hours of 6-7p and he wakes up at 11ish for a feeding. Then again around 4-5a. Getting up to feed him isn't too bad since we put him right back down in the crib. And hubs and I divide and concur (he usually takes the first shift and I take the second) so we still get a good stretch of sleep each. Still, wouldn't it be nice to have a baby who sleeps through the night?!

As for naps, he gets two of them. They are usually 1.5 hours long. Sometimes more if he didn't get 12 hours of nighttime sleep. We use the pacifier in the crib to calm him to sleep.

Will doesn't have any teeth, but I think he's teething. He had a fever for a couple of days, slept poorly, and kept on touching his gums with his tongue. I am on a look out for those teeth! He has also started to belly crawl and can wiggle himself across the room. Will still can't sit for a very long time, but he can almost put himself to a sitting position. Girls tend to hit physical milestones faster than boys and this is definitely the case with us. Anna was already pulling herself up to stand at this point! But Will is making progress so I am not worried. Besides, he's my last baby so I am just trying to enjoy it as much as possible.

According to our home scale, he weighs just under 20 pounds. He's still big, but growing slower now. I don't think he will be more than 24 pounds by the time he turns 1, which is just normal.

Will is at a great stage right now and is just becoming more and more fun. His goofy smiles melt my heart. If he wasn't so heavy, I would love to just hold him all day long and soak him up!

baba's day

Baba's Day 2012
baba's day 2012 was sweet, even though we got one sick kid on our hands.
(it's Will this time...we think he's teething.)
i love that Anna could say "happy baba's day" to hubs this morning.
we celebrated with fried chicken + biscuits. oh, and naps. long naps for 3 of us.
(1 of us played on the ps3 instead.)
these pics pretty much sum up how good hubs is with the kids.
they are lucky to have a doting father who plays games with them.
i love to just sit back and watch.

I know it's partly our fault, but I categorize Anna as a poor eater. She eats in small quantities and, not only that, she's reluctant to self feed. I know we can't blame her entirely since she has always stayed home, pampered by Grandma, who will feed her every bite. And while I was on maternity leave, I continued that trend because it was just easier than fighting. So as a result...we have a 2-year old who can't eat on her own without supervision.

The other problem is getting her to actually eat the food that I give her. Maybe she's just bored with the menu, but man, it's so hard to come up with new stuff to cook. Honestly? Parenthood would be a breeze if I didn't have to worry about feeding her.

Anyway, I thought I would try my hands on making bento-style lunchboxes. See my inspirations here. It's basically a way to offer a variety of food in smaller quantities, in bite sizes, and in a visually appealing way. So far I haven't actually INTRODUCED any new foods to her, but I am having fun making her meals/snacks a little prettier. :)

This was her afternoon snack from yesterday. She ate it all. Self-fed, without me nagging. She ate the crackers first. After all that salt, she ate the fruits. Exactly how I predicted.
This was her breakfast from this morning. She ate nearly all the french toast, hardly touched the turkey, and ate the strawberry. Later she shared a turkey and cheese sandwich with hubs and I gave her a muffin cup of grapes. All self-fed, without me nagging.
I think this method of serving her food works really well with snacks, but not so much with her regular meals. It's hard to make Chinese food pretty, but I am going to try. I already ordered a few more supplies and will report back later!

Question: What do you feed your toddlers? I need ideas.

I can't believe the bad luck. It has only been a month and Anna is sick again. With that awful hand foot mouth disease AGAIN!

Only this time, it's hardly as bad. She had a day of high fever last Wednesday and, three days later, a sore appeared on the tip of her tongue. But luckily, unlike last time, no other sores have yet popped up. So I am hoping that it's a mild case.

But regardless...

She eats poorly, cries inconsolably, and has a really bad case of mood swings. SIGH.

We stayed in all weekend. Although she still has spurts of happiness, taking her out when she feels lousy is just asking for trouble. Saturday was actually a very good day. The whole family spent time in the basement where it was cool and we all had a lot of fun. Sunday...oy vey...I think there was some kind of meltdown every 10 minutes.

Last time it took 7 days for her to recover. We are on Day 5 today. Two days left? I hope.
Side notes:
1. My kids are so cute!
2. I finally succumbed and joined Pinterest. I am at sugarlens was taken. :(

easy as 1-2-3

Anna can recite (1, 2, 3....all the way to 20) and identify (0-9) numbers, but can't truly count.

Like: If I ask her to hand me a X number of crayons, she can't do it without my help. Or if I give her marbles to count, she usually skip a few numbers. But if I write down a number and ask her to identify it, her accuracy is almost 100%. And I hear her recite numbers (in English and Chinese) perfectly as she goes up and down the steps.

So, as I said, she doesn't truly know how to count. She doesn't know the difference between 3 or 8 or 10. Or at least...I don't think so.

I feel like a smarty-pants for coming up with this activity to help her learn. No explanations needed, I am sure. The whole point is to help her 1) associate numbers with objects and 2) learn numbers are not all equal!

recently / all about will

Will is 6.5 months old and is just happy as can be. We rarely have to get him to smile for the camera!

He loves his family, especially his sister. It seems like he's more tolerable with us putting him down when Anna is around. Also, he really likes it when we bring him to our bed in the early morning. He's still working on sitting up, but gets up and rocks on 4s more often. We help him stand and he can last a while as long as he has something to support.

Will is a little piggy, but he's actually only in the 75 percentile according to his latest check-up. He gets angry when he sees us eating but not feeding him. So to appease him, we just give him a lick of what we are having. He has had mashed potatoes (from IKEA), scrambled eggs with ketchup, and noodles.

He likes to screech at the top of his lungs, no matter his mood. Maybe we have an opera singer on our hands?

Yes...6.5 months old and just the best. And no, I am not at all biased. ;)
