Happy Halloweening

Because Anna was born in the Year of the Tiger, it was a no-brainer to dress her up as one for her first Halloween!

She was such a good sport. Got her in the costume without any struggle and she was all smiles, practicing her roar.

We took our sweet tiger trick-or-treating. Knocked on several neighbor's doors and got some chocolates...for hubs and me to munch. We went before dark, so not many kids were out yet, but we did meet a fellow baby in stripes.

Well, after we got home, it wasn't long before her bedtime. So we just turned on the porch light and left a bowl of candies out for the kids. Overall, a very nice Halloween!

poetry in motion

As of last week, the baby has been crawling (for REAL, on hands and knees, deliberately marching forward).

Please excuse my high pitched squeals...but you other mommies understand, right?

Home Improvement: Lights!

Over the weekend, we installed some lights for our backyard. Okay, to be fair, when I say "we", I mean "hubs' dad", because he did all the work and we observed.

Untitled-1
See, at night, our backyard is pitch black. Like, I-can’t-even-see-my-fingers-when-I-hold-‘em-up-to-my-face dark. I don’t know how the previous owners survived 25 years without any light source, but we need it for taking the dogs out at night.

Not sure what exactly was done to install the lights so I won't go into details, but at the end of 1.5 hours, we now have these shiny spotlights to illuminate the backyard. They are motion sensing so they turn on automatically when there is movement. It's convenient (no need to flip a light switch, although an option from inside the house) and I think it adds some protection in case of any unwelcome visitors.

And to save energy, they only turn on when it is dark so the dogs can run by it all day and there won’t be any waste.

32 weeks + some milestones

the usual nanner smile
Anna just turned 32 weeks (a week away from 7.5 months) and she has added a couple new tricks to her repertoire:

*pulling herself to stand while holding onto something
*crawling for real, but very slooooooooowy
*getting to sitting position from crawling
*attempting to dive off of beds and couches
*rolling over and over and over…and over

In short, she’s happy and growing up!

foolproof roasted rosemary potatoes

rosemary roasted potatoes
I know it's bad manners to brag, but these potatoes are so good and so simple to make that you must give it a try. I know this will become a regular in our household...as we seem to have an overabundant supply of rosemary thanks to our little garden.

you need:
red potatoes (cut into chunks), fresh rosemary, olive oil, salt, pepper

you will:
combine rosemary, oil, salt, and pepper in a large bowl. coat the potatoes with the mixture. put onto a baking sheet. bake for 1 hr in a 400-degree oven. turn over potatoes as needed during baking. enjoy!

more books

We added some new books to Anna's library, thanks to hubs' recent trip to T.J.Maxx. Love that place for discounted books.

Here are just some pics of Anna and her basket full of goodies.

PS. Haha, But Not the Hippopotamus is becoming my favorite. That book cracks me up, not to mention just plain cute to read.

PPS. I don't like buying too much baby stuff. In fact, the less I buy (and know that we can do without) the better I feel. But I am weak when it comes to books...if not for reading, they are so pretty to display. :)

lately:

foliage
i’m witnessing a slow change of colors from green to brilliant gold + red. the long, narrow road that i take daily is surrounded by mature trees and i find myself eying them, instead of the road. yikes.

i’m amazed at how swiftly the weeks go by. it’s already wednesday and the weekend will be here before i know it. not that i am complaining. but it’s a shame that the weekend go by even quicker.

i’m loving google reader. it keeps me updated in the blogosphere, all in one fell swoop.

i have 'summer of '69' on repeat. random, i know.

i've been feeling both exhausted and anxious about (the lack of) keeping up around here, which is silly, because i know it's not vital to daily living. but blogging is so good for my soul, and i could never entirely set it aside. which is why

i’m so looking forward to my day off at the end of the month. it’s just one little day, but I am going to use it to its fullest. which means doing nothing at all. except maybe finally sort + post some pictures from our cruise.

from drab to fab (+ 31 weeks)

Just a little short post to share one of the many things we did over the weekend.

Remember this chair I stumbled upon in my old neighborhood? Someone had tossed it out, but I saw potential.

I know I said it would be my project to refinish it, but hubs came to rescue.

First, sand.

Second, spray paint. We used a very bright red color. Let it dry completely.

7 months

push up
7 months today, baby.

What a crazy month it has been for you. You developed your first fever, stopped sleeping through the night (but thankfully only lasted a few days), and overall not your cheeky self. But guess what? You came through and have two little teeth to show for. Wish you would slow down for a second so I can snap a better pic of your new chompers.

This month, we are working on teaching you a bit of sign language. Just the basics. Drink, eat, and bye-bye. You don't seem to understand, but hopefully will as we use them more consistently.

Some days you babble up a storm, but some days you are as quiet as a mouse. The other day, you turned to my direction and muttered “mama”. You haven’t repeated it since, so I am not announcing it to the world just yet.

You are interested in your books - not for reading, but for eating. We let your watch a bit of baby shows, but instead, all you want to do is creep and explore. You bang your toys together, passing them from hand to hand.

Your new hobby is crawling all over Mama and pulling yourself to stand. It’s so amazing to watch and I am loving it. You know what else I am loving? Your baby giggles and your mouth-wide-open smiles. So precious.

As sappy as it sounds, watching you become a little person in front of my eyes is definitely one of the best rewards of being a mom.

Our Home: Part II (Exterior)

So....this is our house.

It's a classic brick-front colonial. It's 25 years young. It's not monstrous in size, but not a shoe box either. It's in a small, quiet neighborhood of just 29 houses. I am glad we waited 3 years for this one to come along.

Our House
Anna wouldn't sit still
Unfortunately, there is not much of a green pasture in the backyard due to a very tall and large pine tree. We plan to have it cut down so we can grow some grass. Maybe put up a fence for the boys.

In the very distant future, we would like to turn that screened-in deck into a real living space. Like a sunroom.

Our Backyard
Regardless, I love that we live here.

2nd photo: Anna is such a busybody. She wouldn't sit still for a second!

pearly whites + 30 weeks

my two front teeth
Perhaps Anna wasn't sick after all...perhaps she developed that bad fever because she was sprouting teeth!

Today while playing in front of the mirror, I noticed Anna's two lower teeth cut through!

My little girl is suddenly all grown up. *sniffles*

Teething is definitely no easy task. Looking back, Anna had all the classic symptoms, but I never suspected teething because I just assumed that she got sick due to the cold weather. Her symptoms included: fussiness, waking up 1-3 times during the night, pulling on ears, coughing, and eating less. She also had odd body rashes and diarrhea, which I just learned could be the cause of teething as well.

Next time, I hope I will read the signs better.

Anna also turned the big 3-0 {weeks} today, but as her shirt says, she will always be "sweet & petite" to me.

Our home: Part I (Main Level)

Hard to believe we've lived in our new house for over a month already. It's high time I took some pictures and shared them with you guys, agree?

I must admit that the reason why it took me this long to share was because I wanted our home to be nicely decorated before the big reveal. But let’s be frank, if I wait until all the rooms look picture perfect, it will be another 5 years before I write this post.

The thing about homes – all the furniture pieces and the way they are decorated – is that they evolve over time, and 5 years down the road, I will be excited to look back at this post and see how far we have traveled.

I am also going to make an effort in blogging more about our home in the future. Our purchases, big or small. Our DIY triumphs and failures. There are a few things that we have done already (such as replacing the hideous light fixture in the breakfast area (wildly successful) or hanging lanterns in Anna’s room (an absolute letdown) or the fact that our garage now looks like a Black & Decker showroom that I didn’t think were significant to write about. But now, I think posts on those projects would have served as a nice reminder of the moments in our life, which is essentially what this blog is all about.

So prepare yourself for more stories on how we are turning this house into a home.

Anyway, without any further ado, I give you our home:

So as you can see, lots of work to be done. The biggie and the most important - paint! The entire house right now is covered in baby yellow and we are less than thrilled.

Next post will include a picture of the exterior.

the only silver lining

sickies
to a sick baby is that she will lay still in our arms for hours...something that she hasn't done since she was a wee little baby.

Yes, we are busy nursing our (overheated) munchkin back to health here. Just entered day 2 and can only hope that the end of the tunnel is near. Fingers and toes crossed.

welcome October

I am a bit slow…but Happy October! Can you even believe another new month has rolled around?

Things I am looking forward to this month...

--Buying a perfect round + bright orange pumpkin, along with other fall things, to decorate our front stoop. Maybe I will finally get to it this weekend.

--Dressing up Anna for her first Halloween and taking her trick or treating. Not doing anything too ambitious, just hopefully to a few houses on our street before bedtime. Hey, if we are going to give out candies, might as well get some in return, right? ;)

green is my favorite color

...and that's it. I am sure there will be other stuff popping up, but I am making no other plans. I just want to stay put & enjoy our comfy little home.

On another note, fall is officially in the air. Chilly weather and fall foliage is upon us. Can’t wait to have a little photoshoot with Anna playing in eating (picture above is a foreshadow of what's to come) the gold+red leaves. Really, the only downside that I can think of to fall is the early sunset, but even that is giving us some really cozy evenings at home. Don’t you agree?

What are you up to this month?
