Anna @ 3.5 Months

I am finding myself forgetting the details about Anna's first few months of life that I am going to start document more of her on the blog (I know, I know, like my blog isn't entirely all about her already). Anyway, I don't usually do half month posts, but thought I would do one this month.

Anna is 3.5 months old. She has a very good sleeping habit. We put her down for the night around 9-10pm and she SLEEPS THROUGH THE NIGHT until 6am...or later! She naps 4 times a day, lasting anywhere from 45 minutes to 2 hours. Since learning to put herself down for naps, life has been grand. Sometimes she still needs a bit of rocking to calm down, though.

She eats 5 times a day. We consistently give her 140-150cc per feeding and sometimes she eats every last drop and sometimes she doesn't. She has been eating less since dropping the overnight bottle. In the past 2 weeks, she eats 600-700cc a day. Less than what she ate when she was younger. I hope she's still on track as far as growth.

After having way too many diaper blow-outs, we switched to size 2 diapers just a couple of days ago. Sigh, my little girl is growing up all too fast.

When she is on her tummy, I can see that she is beginning to bring her knees up and giving a little kick – the first signs of crawling.

When she's on her back, she twists halfway - attempts to roll over - but her arm gets in the way. I am anxiously waiting for her to reach this milestone...but know that she will do it when she's ready.

Anna is as happy as ever. She gives out smiles generously and her squinty-eyed laugh-out-loud looks are precious. Her giggles and laughs can turn any frowns upside down.

She loves music and tolerates books.

She's just such a pleasure to be with.

Video: I am fairly certain no one can make Anna laugh like hubs can.

the last weekend of june

I had a nice, relaxing weekend* and here are the reasons why:

* Slept in on Saturday while hubs bonded with took care of baby. What a luxury to wake up feeling refreshed.
* Saw Toy Story 3 in 3D. I give this movie 10 blazing stars. Have you seen it? You should. Like, now.
* Late-night $6 pizza from Dominos. And cinnamon sticks.
* Family party on the bed. Highlight: Pargo "pawed" baby for tummy rub for the first time. So nice to see the siblings interact.
* Baby behaved like a dream while being dragged around to see open houses in the heat. One lady commented - she's such a good and mellow baby!

It was a simple weekend.

And as expected, it went by a little too quickly.

thank you, bumbo & baby bach

Baby Bach
Because of you guys, I found time to 1) feed myself, 2) tape Pesto's white hair off my red couch, and 3) snap these cute pictures.

Thank you, Bumbo, for helping Anna sit upright now that she's no longer content with lounging on the bouncer. (Yes, that girl of mine doesn't know how to enjoy the good life yet.)

Thank you, Baby Bach, for being so interesting and captivating that my girl was quiet + still for 20 minutes. I don't quite understand what's so fascinating about random images of fruits and vegetables...but as long as baby is happy, Mama is happy.

Bumbo
You are both very much appreciated!

So...Monday again.

Hope you all had a fabulous weekend. Mine was good. Busy. Lots of running around visiting both sides of family...and little Anna was a trooper through it all. Not one single fuss came out of her. And good news! - it looks like her stranger anxiety was only temporary. She was in such a happy mood, hopping from one set of arms to another and treating everyone like old friends.

After a busy weekend and with the sweltering heat forecasted for the week, we are staying in the next 5 days with the air conditioner cranked up high. Got two boxes of ice cream sandwiches in the freezer ready for action. Despite the heat, am loving this time of the year. The sun is bright and the days are lasting forever. Not too mention the lazy days I get to spend with my girl + puppies.

It may just be the beginning, but am wishing summer 2010 will never end.

chopped

post baby chop 6/20/2010
Call it fresh.
Call it just in time for the summer.
Call it my inevitable post baby chop.
But $15 later, I am feeling airer, bouncier, and slightly cuter.

pretty much the easist card to make

As the title of this posted indicated, this card was just plain easy to make.

Pick photo of any size (mine was 3.5 x 5). Trim cardstock to (roughly) 7.5 x 5.25, but this is dependent on the photo size. Score cardstock lengthwise and fold. Glue photo to the inside of card. Use a circle punch to create a "window" on the front flap. Done.

Told you it was easy.

Now just need to get Anna to write a cute, sweet message and this Papa's Day card will be complete.

My 7 Must-Haves & 3 Nice-To-Haves

I loved reading new moms' baby gear recommendations while I was pregnant, so I thought I'd do a post on my own recommendations - what I've found essential for the past 3 months.

**My Must-Haves**

1. Diapers and wipes. Whenever I see a good deal, I buy diapers and wipes by the truckload. Our spare bedroom has been overtaken by boxes and boxes of 'em. I *think* I have enough diapers and wipes to last Anna until mid next year.

2. Breast pump and bottles. I didn't think my little manual pump would work out since I pump exclusively, but since cutting down to pumping just 3 times a day, I really have no need to buy an electric one anymore. My pump is a lifesaver since I gave up breastfeeding almost from the very beginning, but still wanted to feed Anna breast milk. As for the bottles, I really lucked out that I didn't have to search high and low to find bottles that Anna likes. I use Born Free and have 6 of them in rotation.

3. Old-school cloth diapers as burp cloths. These are super soft and absorbent. I go through these like mad and can easily say they are one of the best purchases we made. They clean up all sort of messes, definitely not just for burping.

4. Onesies. ...and lots and lots them to avoid doing laundry every single day. To get more mileage, I bought mostly 3-6 months onesies when pregnant. If I can have a do-over, I would buy at least a handful of smaller ones (newborn size) that fit her better as a newborn.

5. The bouncer. I don't have bionic arms and can't hold the baby all the time. The bouncer is a place for me to put Anna down without having to put her completely flat. This way she can still see the world around her. I never expected this to be the most used baby gear, but it is worth every penny. There is no need to buy the fanciest one out there. We don't use the vibration and turn on the music for only about 10 minutes a day. I have this one.

6. Car seat. Because we wouldn't be able to take Anna anywhere without one. I have the Graco Travel System.

7. Pencil and paper. To keep track of Anna's feeding time and amount. Because as a new mom, I have too much other stuff going on to remember.

**My Nice-To-Haves**
Everything else we bought/received* falls under the Nice-To-Haves category, however, there are some particular items we use especially frequently and are extremely helpful when taking care of Anna.

1. Pack 'n Play. I like the changing table and its built-in storage for diapers and wipes. As for the bassinet, we basically just use it as a place to hold all Baby A's toys to keep our place tidy. As she gets older, we will remove the bassinet and use the playpen for its real purpose.

diaper change

2. Aden and Anias swaddle blankets. These blankets are made of thin stretchy (and breathable!) muslin and they’re giant - which makes them perfect for swaddling. At around 11-12 week, we stopped swaddling Anna, but these still make nice blankets to cover her up when we have the air condition running. I also use them for tummy time.

3. Bralettes (no real nursing bras for me) and nursing pads keep me comfy.

Conclusion: It really doesn't take that much to raise a baby!

3 months already?

3 months old
Dear Baby A,

Another month has slipped away and I am loving more than ever watching you grow. You are so smiley, and a lot less fussy now that I've got your nap time business 95% figured out. It's safe to say that you are a happy baby.

Some notables for the month:

* You love your jumperoo. I thought you were too young for it, but you proved me wrong. You like to study the toys and jump to your heart's content. Sometimes Papa grabs your chunky legs and helps you jump and you let out the cutest giggles!

* You are still a few months away from entering the solid food world, but that haven't stopped us from giving you a taste of whatever we are eating. You have tasted everything from watermelon to chocolates. Sometimes that little tongue of yours go completely wild, but sometimes you give us your sourest face. It is such a treat to watch you!

* You don't roll over on commend, but you have rolled over a couple of times. Tummy to back. But I think what you really want to do is skip the whole rolling and crawling and go straight to standing.

* You like to play with your hair. This is your signature pose:
3 months old
* You are making more and different noises, and recently you have discovered that you can put a little volume behind those noises and have started screeching and yelling.

Baby A, you are at that fun stage and I am so glad to be a part of your life everyday. What kind of amusement will you bring us this month? Can't wait to find out. Love you lots, girlfriend! Happy 3 months!

baby literature

bookworm
bookworm
Anna and I went to Barnes and Noble and bought a few books to add to her little library today. (FYI...she was awake the entire time and behaved! The key was to make sure she was fed, cleaned, and rested before leaving the house.) I am fairly clueless when it comes to children books so I stuck with what I do know and got some Dr. Seuss board books.

Later, before I put the books away, we cuddled up in bed and read "Mr. Brown Can Moo, Can You?". What a fun, delightful book.

good book, Mama!
Other books we bought over the weekend: Let's Dance, Little Pookie, What's Wrong, Little Pookie?, Night-Night, Little Pookie, Opposites, Blue Hat, Greet Hat, Horns to Toes and In Between. All by Sandra Boynton. We I really like her books.

Anna's book collection is growing!

tummy time + Pesto

Anna... can't get enough of her! It seems like she is changing daily, trying new things, developing new skills. She doesn't complain too much while on her tummy anymore (maybe it's because Pesto is always there cheering her on), and I get excited every time I see it. She's the best!

We just had a long tummy time session and she worked so hard that she's resting. Perfect time for me to put these pictures up for you to see!

a new beginning

Friends! It's a wonderful day in our household. I finally discovered a gold mine with Anna, called 'The Baby Can Put Herself to Sleep'. I put her in the bouncer (where she takes most of her naps), tuck her in tight with a blanket, and walk away. And if she really is tired and sleepy, after a few minutes of squirming, she will slip into dreamland without any rocking or soothing (something I have been doing since Day 1) on my part.

a new beginning
For all mommies out there reading my blog, I think you will agree with me that this is a huge milestone, even though it technically isn't one according to the baby books. This means I get to have two hours of my day back. This means no more back pains from sitting on the floor. Break out the confetti, this calls for a celebration! Who's with me? :)

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend. I know I will.

Dear Blogger:

I know you are free and all, but I am not pleased. Months ago, I noticed that pictures in some of my older posts have disappeared! I meant to look into it, but I delivered a baby and things got crazy. Now that I am gaining some free time back and I am going through my older posts again, I found that more pictures have vanished! I work very hard on my posts - especially my travel posts - and I am frustrated that this happened.

So again, I know you provide a free service and, because of that, I am sticking with you, but I am so, so upset. Just FYI.

Your unhappy customer,
{sugarlens}
---

Have any of you experienced this? Pictures from my 01/08 and earlier posts have randomly disappeared. As far as I know, Blogger has unlimited storage, so this may just bad luck on my part. Anyway, I don't know why or how it happened, but it did, and I can't get over that all the time I put into in writing those posts are wasted.

I don't have a way in getting those pictures back, but I did find a solution to prevent this from happening in the future. One word: Flickr. Thanks to hubs, I now have a "pro" account in Flickr and all the pictures in my blog posts (from this point forward) will be linked from it. With the "pro" account, I have unlimited uploads and storage. I tried using Flickr before, but stopped soon after because with a regular account, I could only upload ~30 pictures a month. All these missing pictures was enough for us to get the "pro" account without much of a thought.

Because of Flickr, we decided to widen the main column on {sugarlens} to accommodate bigger picture size. And I think my blog looks a lot better!

So buh bye missing pics, but a big hello (again) to Flickr.

Anna's (Rough) Daily Schedule, Take Two

Have I mentioned that I am getting a hang at Anna's sleep-play-feed schedule? Because I am! After 2 1/2 months of living in chaos, I *think* me and this little girl of mine are finally on the same sheet of music.

I am much better at reading her sleepy cues and putting her down (which is usually 1.5 - 2 hours from the time she wakes up) before she gets too fussy. During her awake time, I feed her, change her, and play with her. She takes better naps in the morning and early afternoon than in the evening. Anna is all about catnaps later in the day.

Our daytime routine is fairly regular.

Then at night, hubs reads to her around 8pm. After story time, she gets a bottle and falls asleep for the day by 9 - 9:30pm. She is really good at sleeping longer stretches - minimum of 6 hours - so we wake up around 3-4am to feed her and she wakes up around 7:30-8am in the morning.

Since the last time I blogged about her schedule @ 1 month, I have seen significant improvement!

However, I know babies' schedules change constantly. Just as I get use to a schedule that I and Anna seem to have settled into, something is bound to change. All I know is that I will toss the schedule out of the window if I see Anna needing to eat or sleep more on a particular day. Because ultimately, if baby is well-rested with good naps and fed regularly, the whole time she's awake during the day she will be laughing, playing, and happy.
