Gong Xi Fa Cai 2009

Today is Lunar New Year, year of the Ox. Last night, New Years Eve, we had reunion dinner with hubs side of the family.

We had the traditional fare - noodles to symbolize longevity/long life and fish to symbolize surplus/having savings. In addition, there were roasted duck and grilled pork. Everything was succulent. We doggy-bagged enough food for at least the next three days.

It was a cozy dinner of 7 adults, 2 kids, and 2 dogs. Pesto met the family for the first time. We watched Chinese programs on TV. We had the usual family chatter. I learned that my SIL is a master at finding bargains. Random!

At the end of the night, we received red packets!

Later as we were getting ready for bed, I told hubs about the experiences I had celebrating Lunar New Year in Taiwan as a kid. Relatives from near and far gather for a few days to play cards, make paper lanterns, eat sweets, and wear red clothes. It was all about having time off from school and having fun.

I thought to myself, someday, I want to visit Taiwan during Lunar New Year festivities as an adult.

  1. Happy New Year to you and your family. That dinner table looks delish!

By the way, what does the ox symbolize (if anything)?

  2. Dorkys, thanks!

Those born in the Year of the Ox have the following characteristics:

"Steadfast, solid, a goal-oriented leader, detail-oriented, hard-working, stubborn, serious and introverted but can feel lonely and insecure. Takes comfort in friends and family and is a reliable, protective and strong companion."

Do you know what's your sign?

  3. Yes please, spring festival in Asia would be a blast. Maybe next year? I'll be all done with classes by then and eager as hell to get back over there. But yeah, it was a good day with good food.

  4. Sea Bass,

Better start planning, next year's Lunar New Year falls on 2/14. Maybe we can finally use your free ticket!

  5. I think I was born in the year of the rat in '82. Let me double check...

Ok, I was totally wrong. It was the year of the dog. Does this mean I'm doomed to always be a man's best friend?

  6. Happy New Year to you also! Your spread looks so yummy also.

  7. Happy New Year to you! This sounds lovely.
