My Summer Blockbuster

I have a confession to make. I was a late bloomer; I didn’t discover Sex and the City until the series had ended. I mean, I had always known about this popular HBO sitcom, but never gave any thoughts to watch the show. Sex and the City premiered in 1998 when I was still in college (therefore, couldn’t relate to the 30-something characters in the show) and by the time it ended in 2004, I still very much preferred shows such as Friends and Gilmore Girls. =P

Early 2005, Luke and I took yet another trip to Orlando (but instead of Disney World, we visited Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure). Unfortunately, Luke caught a nasty bug right from the beginning of the trip and long story short, we spent a lot of time in the hotel room. With him trying to get over the bug, he spent his days sleeping and that left me with a lot of time to channel surf. This was when I saw a Sex and the City episode from beginning to end for the first time and I was hooked. Even though I still couldn’t relate to the lives of these women (who can take sex so casually and afford pairs and pairs of Manolos), I enjoyed the girly-bond and the relationship talk.

Immediately after we got back (by the way, Luke recovered on the very last day of the trip and we did manage to ride all the rides – at least twice), I asked my brother Andy to borrow the DVDs for me since he was in some sort of membership at that time. I think I watched the entire series in a matter of weeks – if even that. I couldn’t believe I missed all this when it was on air! What I liked the most about the series, besides the fashion eye-candy, was watching the friendship these women share.

For Christmas 2005, Luke gifted me the Sex and the City – The Complete Series Collector Set. I thanked him by ignoring him for the rest of the holiday season and watched the series from beginning to end….again. =]

Although the series ended on a very positive note - Carrie back with Big, Charlotte finally becoming a mom, Miranda living a happy family life, and Samantha….well, being her regular self with Smith - I was disappointed that it only lasted for 6 seasons. I was hungry for more!

So ask me if I am excited about the upcoming movie. You betcha!

  3. Finally saw the movie this weekend! I liked it, but I can see why people said it wasn't very good. Nonetheless, I love the ending. It was perfect.
